Referrals
We have specialist accreditation to treat eye conditions in practice and save you a trip to the hospital
When you’re suffering from an eye condition, it is often not only an uncomfortable time but also an anxious one too, especially if you’re not sure what your treatment might involve. That’s why we are involved in a number of referral schemes, so that you can receive as much treatment as possible in the comfort and familiarity of one of our practices. You’ll also avoid the infamous waiting times associated with GP surgeries and hospitals.
Cataract Monitoring
Cataracts – which form when the lens of your eye hardens and becomes cloudy – often have effects on your vision which can largely be corrected with prescription glasses. We are able to monitor your progress in practice and adapt your prescription as necessary, without the need for you to attend check-up appointments with your GP. However, if your lens becomes so cloudy that it begins to impair your vision, it may be necessary to refer you for cataract surgery; a relatively routine procedure that can be done as an outpatient at most hospitals.
Glaucoma Monitoring
Glaucoma occurs when the pressure inside your eyeball increases, which over time can put strain on your optic nerve and eventually affect your vision. You will need regular eye examinations and assessments to monitor your condition and determine whether it is changing in any way, but these can be done in practice rather than at your GP surgery or local hospital. In some cases, glaucoma can develop into a more serious problem, in which case we would be able to detect this at the earliest possible stage and refer you for medical treatment.
Minor Eye Conditions Scheme ( MECS )
There are many causes of red eye, ranging from an internal condition or infection to a foreign body trapped in the eye. We are able to assess your condition to determine its cause, and provide most treatment in practice. Where necessary, you may be referred to the hospital for follow-up appointments or if your situation requires more complex management. However, in most cases we can save you a trip to the GP straight away!
Paediatric EyeCare
As with many senses and functions, childhood years are crucial to the development of your youngster’s eyesight. Many vision problems that are detected before the age of eight can be corrected completely for later life. However, in the event that your child has a more complex or chronic eye problem, we are qualified to monitor their development and progress in practice, with no need for anxiety-inducing hospital trips.
Macular Degeneration Urgent Referral Service
Macular degeneration typically develops in later life, and if left untreated can cause severe vision problems and even permanent vision loss. Using our specialist retinal imaging technology, we can keep a check on any changes to your retina and determine the need for further treatment at the earliest possible opportunity.
